Why Electric Two-Wheeler are at the forefront of India’s EV Transition?

By March 15, 2022No Comments

70%? That’s incredible.

153%?! Those are unimaginable numbers.

And yet, for EVs in Maharashtra, those numbers are solid reality.

E-vehicle registrations in the state rose by 153% in one year, with more than double the rate seen in Mumbai.

Compared to 9,415 EVs registered in 2020-21, the number of registrations skyrocketed to 23,786 in just nine months of 2021-22 (April 1 to December 27 this year).

All those business statistics and charts may make for productive reading, but truth is, they reflect on customer sentiment. Sentiment that is opening up to the ease of use and access that EVs provide.

Simple plug and charge batteries, which provide a like-to-like fuel expense of a rupee per km, compared to the Rs 6-8 per km for diesel, are proving cost efficient. Furthermore, government subsidies and programs will only see the cost EVs and batteries keep coming down.

And above all, a sustainability conscious population is waking up to the realities of conventional fuel usage, and the environmental costs behind it.

EVs seem to tick all the important boxes for now. And that’s reason good enough to be paying attention to the industry.
